When you think of search engine optimization (SEO), what comes to mind? Many business owners assume that SEO is a daunting task involving coding your website or performing complicated keyword research. But it’s important to remember that SEO goes beyond just your website! It’s the sum of all information about your business online. Learn more about some of the top SEO details business owners need to know below.

Start With Keyword Research

Keyword research is the foundation of good SEO. After all, it’s important to use the words that align with what your customers are searching for! But keyword research doesn’t have to be overly complicated. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  • List the services you provide and the location you’re in.
  • Think about what your customers need from your services.
  • Look for related search terms.

Once you’ve got those keywords in mind, incorporate them throughout your content online. Be mindful of keyword stuffing, though! Using too many keywords or keywords that are irrelevant to your content will harm your SEO, not help it.

Go Beyond Your Website

Speaking of business listings, remember that SEO isn’t just limited to your business’s website! It is comprised of all information related to your business online, such as:

  • Your business’s listing. Updating your business listing with the correct phone number, location, and any other details will make a significant impact on your SEO.
  • Your social media profiles. Regularly posting to social media will help show search engines that your business is active and engaged. Don’t forget to fill out your profiles with all of your business’s information, and link back to your website from time to time in your posts.
  • Your business’s reviews. Any time a customer uses your business’s name in a review, a search engine notices. Many customers also search specifically for business reviews! Make sure your reputation speaks for itself by regularly responding to both positive and negative reviews.

Top Tip: Use your business name in the response when responding to positive reviews, but do not use it when responding to negative reviews!

Consistency, Authority, and Relevance are Key!

Search engines are just like businesses: they want their users to be happy with the service they’re providing! As such, they want to send users to sites that are relevant to what users are searching for, consistently updated with fresh information, and an expert source of information.

As a multi-location business, it’s important to post relevant content for all of your locations. Don’t just focus on your “main” location!

Your customers drive your business, and social media allows you to build rapport naturally. It is normal for some customers to be dissatisfied with your product, but how you handle it affects how others perceive your company. Through online reviews, you can communicate with people who have questions or complaints or who wish to thank you for a great service. Unfortunately, it is difficult to read tone through text. Remember that everyone can read a response, so here are a few things to keep in mind when responding to both positive and negative reviews.
